The present review examines the available empirical and theoretical literature on the relationship between marijuana and violence, including past heretical models, the link between marijuana use and interpersonal violence (including intimate partner violence), and the relationship between marijuana withdrawal and violence. While results from laboratory-based studies are inconclusive, results of cross-sectional and longitudinal research provide support for an association be;en marijuana use/withdrawal and various types of violence. Given the lack of empirical support for existing models, a new biophysically model of the marijuana-violence relationship is proposed. Examining methods to test this model and application of current endings to treatment are discussed. This paper will discuss the ethical issues and propose the righteousness of legalizing marijuana on the federal level, as a controlled substance, while taking two stances: (1 ) the benefits of legalizing marijuana far outweigh its risks, and (2) their inconsistencies in current legal policies governing marijuana in relation to more dangerous drugs, such as alcohol. I. INTRODUCTION What are the prevailing issues for and against legalization of marijuana? Just because something is illegal does not mean it is bad; likewise, if something is legal doesnt mean it is not bad. Unlike law which relies on oratory skills to defend an already-defined legal position ethics tries to esoterically determine what is right and wrong regardless of any law that may, or may not, already exist relating to the issue at hand. This paper will propose the righteousness of legalizing marijuana on the federal level as a controlled substance, while taking two Stances: (1) its benefits far outweigh associated risks, and (2) there are Inconsistencies in current legal policies with marijuana in relation to illegal drugs that are more dangerous as well as those that are legal, accepted, and readily available to he public. Specifically, this paper will compare marijuanas benefits and risks against those of the most common legal recreational drug currently in use today, alcohol. This paper will avoid discussing legalization of medical marijuana, as 12 states already allow its use for medicinal purposes, and there are currently over 2000 legitimate marijuana dispensaries across the nation. However, possession and use of marijuana are still illegal under federal law; and federal law trumps state laws every time. Due to the popularity and ongoing widespread, and historical use of marijuana, a new look should be given to its lace in society as a legal recreational drug alongside, or even replacing alcohol and tobacco. In order to fully appreciate marijuanas place in human society, one must first comprehend its prevalence as a medicinal and recreational drug. Marijuana was cultivated as far back as 5000 years ago. In ancient Chinese and Vivid cultures, it treated a wide range of ailments, including malaria and rheumatism (Silver, Ransom, Tillie, 2010). Pre-1 In addition to its recreational properties, hemp a by-product of the marijuana plant was a major cash crop used for clothing, fabric, and medicine. Both George Washington and Thomas Jefferson grew it, and drafts of the Declaration of Independence were written on hemp paper. Hemp production was mandatory and ordered grown for the United Kingdom (Silver et al. , 2010). With the rise of the 1840-1860 literary movement in France, marijuana gained in popularity as an intoxicant of the intellectual classes, due to claims of it stimulating ones imagination and creativity. In the United States, medical interest in marijuana use was evidenced in 1 860 by the convening of the Committee on Cannabis Indict of the Ohio State Medical Society, which ported on its therapeutic applications Schistose of, n. D. ). The Enslaving Years In 1 930, Harry Enslaving headed up the newly-formed Federal Bureau of Narcotics and crusaded to outlaw marijuana. Congress passed the Marijuana Tax Act in July 1937 in response to pressure by Enslaving, who feared the use and spread of marijuana specifically by Mexicans (Musts, 1972). Enslaving enlisted the media and movie industries to further stigmatize marijuana. In 1938, the exploitation film Reefer Madness linked the use of marijuana by high school children to hit-and-run accidents, manslaughter, suicide, rape, and descent into madness (Reefer Madness, 2010). Engineers efforts to stigmatize marijuana were so successful that by the 1 asss, public fear of marijuana linked its use to government overthrow as well as to communism, Americas most-feared enemy of the time (Silver et al. , 2010). The New War on Drugs In 1 961 , the Single Convention Narcotic Treaty made production and supply of narcotic drugs an international crime. Nevertheless, marijuana regained its popularity and spawned the hippy subculture of the late sasss, who viewed marijuana as symbolizing Americas freedoms. Furthermore, the Vietnam War introduced marijuana to those who otherwise would not have used it our soldiers in Vietnam (Silver et al. , 2010). In 1 971 , President Richard Nixon declared war on drugs, calling it public enemy number one. He created the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEAD) and took a hard-line stance against drugs (Silver et al. , 2010). A decade later, President Ronald Reggaes administration continued the war on drugs when First Lady Nancy Reagan launched her Just Say No campaign (Silver et al. , 2010). This famous catch phrase soon became a mantra recited by elementary school children throughout the United States. President Bill Clinton vowed to keep up the fight against drugs, but was not as systematic as Reagan or Nixon. Consequently, the Mexican drug cartels became stronger during the Clinton years (Silver et al. , 2010). September 11, 2001 marked a new era in the fight against marijuana. The United States tightened its border policies upon President George Bushs declaration of war on terror. This effectively stifled importation of marijuana from Mexico. Consequently, the Mexican drug cartels turned to growing marijuana within United States borders rather than smuggling it across (Silver 1. Statement of the Problem This research paper seeks to determine the advantages of having marijuana here in the Philippines. Marijuana is the most common illicit drug used in the United States. After a period of decline in the last decade, its use has been increasing among young people since 2007, corresponding to a diminishing perception of the drugs risks that may be associated with increased public debate over the drugs legal status. Although the federal government considers marijuana a Schedule I substance (having no medicinal uses and high risk for abuse), two states have legalized marijuana for adult recreational SE, and 21 states have passed laws allowing its use as a treatment for certain medical conditions. However, in the Philippines, as the law stands today, marijuana is illegal. It is a dangerous drug and the selling/use of marijuana is a criminal offense. Soon it would be completely legal to use marijuana in the Philippines. That is, if Congress passes a proposed bill and President Benign Aquinas sign it into the law. On the matter of the possible legalization of marijuana, the researcher seeks to establish the answers to the following questions: 1 . What is the essence Of legalizing marijuana in the Philippines? . What are the benefits and risks associated with marijuana? 3. What are the effects of marijuana to an individual? 4. What are the prevailing issues for and against legalization of marijuana? 1. Significance of the Study Marijuana came into play with the scarcity of alcohol in the olden days. The use of the drug rose from there, and became a large problem in the Unites States. The united States is one of those countries that can immensely benefit from the legalization of Marijuana use. In the States, Marijuana is the most widely used controlled substance, and since the drug is used so often, why tot brew large amounts of money. Selling the drug and at the same time raising the economy of the county would be the perfect plan for the States to get out of the debt that surrounds them. The dealer of the drug would be closely monitored and would have a mandatory license; the government checking the crops for harmful fertilizers, that could make the customer seriously ill. Legalization of the drug would allow crime to be affected in a positive way. Illegal drug crimes consume police officers time, instead of dealing with larger, more serious problems that affect the county. A marijuana smoker is arrested every 45 seconds in Canada and the United States combined. Many Of these offenders receive small fines, and rarely get time in jail, due to the depleted amount of jail cells throughout the country. Legalizing marijuana would allow jail cells for criminals who have created actual crimes, and save money that is spent in prosecuting to inform the drug users about how to smoke responsibly. Illegal drug dealers would be out of business and drug smuggling would be reduced to an all time low. Many people think only crazy pitheads smoke marijuana, but they are wrong. Last year, about 10 million people smoked marijuana on a regular basis, even though many were true citizens who followed the laws. If the government were to regulate marijuana, they would easily be able to monitor the purchase and sale of the product; reducing drug abuse in the country and making smokers feel safe to smoke. One of the largest factors in legalizing the drug is that marijuana eases pain caused by AIDS, cancer and helps to cure glaucomas. Information from the National Cancer Institute, says that marijuana is good in blocking against nausea, vomiting, and loss of appetite with chemotherapy patients. Marijuana can also ease muscle strain associated with multiple sclerosis. If marijuana is the only drug that effectively camouflages pain, there is no other choice but to legalize and use the drug. No person should have a say in this matter unless they have experienced the pain and suffering that the patients with cancer and AIDS have encountered due to their illness. Many people have a stereotypical image of marijuana being a bad, dirty drug, that will make you see delusional, but that is merely what children are told in health class to stay away from drugs, and that is what revolves around adults as well. Over 2000 people die yearly from the toxic effects of Aspirin, which is quite legal, and yet not a single being has died from the effects of marijuana and the substance has been banned. Legalizing marijuana would make a country cleaner, control pain, and smoking would be safer and in government restriction. Legalizing marijuana, is taking one step into making this world a better place to live, in the twentieth century. 1. Scope and Delimitation of the Study II. THEORETICAL AND CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK 2. 1 Review of Related Literature Marijuana is formed from the dried leaves and flowering tops of the Indian MME plant Cannabis sati. Popularly known as grass, pot, reefer, and Mary Jane, marijuana is smoked or chewed for its intoxicating effect, and it has also been used as a sedative and analgesic. Hashish is formed from the resin of the flowering tops of the same plant, and it is five to eight times more potent than marijuana when smoked. The flowering tops of the Cannabis plant secrete a sticky resin that contains the active ingredient of marijuana, known as delta-9-dehydrogenations (TECH). The plant has both male and female forms, and the sticky flowers of the female plant are the most potent.

What Really Happened to Kurt Cobain essays

What Really Happened to Kurt Cobain essays What Really Happened to Kurt Cobain? On April 8, 1994, at 8:40am in a quaint and quiet home in Madrona, Washington, Kurt Cobain, lead singer of Nirvana, was found dead with a shotgun wound to his head in the greenhouse above his garage. Also present was a cigar box containing drug paraphernalia, needles, lighters, etc. A suicide note was also discovered. From this scene, it is almost too obvious what happened; at least, that was the conclusion immediately drawn, and eventually made final, by the police. Yet, not everyone was so quick to close the case. Many remained skeptical on the issue. Some pondered the idea that maybe he was murdered, while others wish to leave it as is. I join the millions of people in the world that just dont buy into the suicide theory and that are curious about the details of the case, circumstances surrounding the murder scene, and the people closest to Kurt Cobain that could have been involved in his death. The voice of a generation was dead. Thus was the world ushered into a world without Kurt Cobain. For millions, April 8, 1994 became a day as indelibly branded into their memories as November 22, 1963, August 16, 1977, and December 8, 1980-the deathdates of JFK, Elvis, and John Lennon (Halperin 3,4). Ian Halperin and Max Wallace tragically outline the day America was told another cherished icon had died. For many who did not know of Kurt Cobain, just another musician had emotionally crashed and killed himself. Some people, however, continued to explore other possibilities. Curiosity caught my attention after realizing how many others held the same speculations as I did. To learn more, I gathered several resources to assist me in my study. Although I read each, most of my information comes from four resources. The book Kurt Cobain, Beyond Nirvana: The Legacy of Kurt Cobain, by Hank Harrison (father of Courtney Love, Kurts wife), not only gives an exc...

Billy Elliot the Musical and Father

Some obstacles the characters face are self-belief, a father’s expectations and being an individual. This essay will discuss these challenges and how a person overcomes them to journey into the world with the use of quotes, film and language techniques. Self-belief is a factor that makes a person stronger. Without it they may not reach their goals. In the scene of Billy Elliot where Billy dances in front of his father, the audience sees that this is the first time that Billy genuinely believes in himself. The non-diegetic music is loud and energetic. This represents the fact that Billy has built enough self-confidence to stand up for himself. A close-up is used on Billy’s face when he starts to dance. This technique is used to emphasise the expression of confidence and self-belief on his face. It shows his emotion and how he isn’t afraid to do what he wants. There is also a close up on the father’s face that seems to be stunned while watching Billy. After Billy finishes dancing, his father runs to Mrs Wilkinson’s house because that is when he realised that his son really has talent. In the quote â€Å"If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,† from the poem ‘If’ the father is telling his son to have faith in himself when others don’t. In the movie, if Billy had not stood up for himself, his father wouldn’t have thought to let him go to the ballet school. The self-belief Billy had led him to success in the future. Expectations can put a lot of pressure on a child. In society, boys were expected to play manly sports like boxing, and girls to learn ballet. In the scene where Billy falls to an opponent at boxing his coach yells â€Å"Jesus Christ, Billy Elliot! You’re a disgrace to them gloves, your father, and the traditions of this boxing hall! † A high angle shot over Billy when he is on the ground is used to show he is weak and powerless in this situation. This technique develops the feeling that elder men in society had more control. There is also a mid-shot of Billy’s father sitting in the grand-stands looking exasperated after Billy falls. It shows the audience the father does not feel Billy is living up to his expectations. From the poem, the quote â€Å"which is more – you’ll be a Man my son! shows the audience the father ultimately expects his son to be a man. The word ‘man’ is written with a capital letter to emphasise this point. Though Billy held back doing from ballet, he still become a man and everyone soon supported his decision. To be an individual is what a young child seeks to be. It was normal in the community for boys to do manly sports such as boxing, and girls to learn b allet. When Billy’s father finds out that he has been secretly going to ballet lessons he says â€Å"All right for your Nana, for girls. No, not for lads, Billy. Lads do football, or boxing, or wrestling. Not friggin’ ballet. † What Billy really wants to do is not accepted for boys in the society. The quote â€Å"If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,† from the poem, the father is now telling his son not to be influenced by those around him and to keep his honour and morals. By having his own way and not allowing others to influence, the son will be an individual. In the scene where Billy dances with Mrs Wilkinson to the song ‘I Like to Boogie’, Mrs Wilkinson helps Billy be his own person by letting him dance the way he wants and not preventing him from doing anything. The technique of contrasting is used with Billy’s and Mrs Wilkinson’s clothing. In the boxing hall Billy is wearing white and pink which stands out from the walls. Mrs Wilkinson wears a dull, blue colour which makes her blend into the background. This technique shows that Mrs Wilkinson is a hidden support for Billy. She is helping Billy reach his goal because she never had the chance to shine. A tracking shot is used on the both when they dance in the hall. It shows the dynamic movement between them. This technique also displays the freedom Billy has to move in the hall. In conclusion, individuals must overcome each obstacle and challenge in order to grow up and journey into the world. This has been shown through the film ‘Billy Elliot’ by Stephen Daldry and the poem ‘If’ by Rudyard Kipling. With the use of techniques and quotes, this essay has shown how the main characters encountered the challenges of self-belief, a father’s expectations and trying to be an individual.

Modern management of Honda Company Research Paper

Modern management of Honda Company - Research Paper Example Honda is the leading global developer of motorcycles and internal combustion engines. It is located in Singapore, Japan. This company became dominant over Nissan in 2001 and gained the position of one of the most successful and largest manufacturers in Japan. In 2008 Honda over passed Chrysler and became the greatest manufacturer in the USA. In the world the Company gains the position of the sixth largest manufacturer of automobile. As far as we can see, the company is a powerful and estimable competitor in the arena of the global automobile industry. In order to advance its positions in the modern world, Honda should increase its sales. Unlike its main competitors, the Detroit Big Three and Toyota, Honda gained a 1% increase of sales in America (The Official Website of Honda). Still, there is a need to focus more on the demands of global markets and take into account advanced needs if the customers all over the world. Two basic pillars of the modern demand of the automobile industry is environmental safety and energy efficiency. Moreover, in accordance with recent statistical data: â€Å"Honda is the largest engine maker in the world, producing nearly 11 million engines annually for its three product lines, including sales of engines to other manufacturers. Honda also builds products in more than 100 manufacturing plants in 33 countries, employing more than 125,000 associates globally† (The Official Website of Honda). The most beneficial strategy chosen by Honda in terms of economical crisis in the world can be illustrated by the Civic and the Accord automobiles. These models of automobiles are of mid-size and there is a high fuel-efficiency of the vehicles. There is also an essential flexibility of the automobiles. Moreover, within the last decade Honda managed to create their factories more flexible and these are able to reshape any Honda model of the automobile at any moment. Global locations of the Company’s plants in such countries as Canada , England, Brazil, Belgium and many others indicate their leading positions of Japanese market and the important role it plays globally (Honda Raffles Trip to Japan to Celebrate 20 Years).   Another benefit of Honda is its acknowledgement by the customers around the globe, because it produces economically friendly automobiles. Moreover, constant innovative developments indicate Honda’s ability to be successful in the global arena. High quality products at a low price- this is one of the main advantages of the company as well, especially in the post-crisis economical period. Environmental factors affecting business Modern automobile industry exists in a challenging global environment. Such factors, as social, political, economic and technological ones should be taken into account by the car producers. On the example of Honda it should be noted that this large car manufacturer is surrounded by preventive environmental factors. Political factors, such as degree of intervention in the economy, are rather influential external factor for automobile industry. There are set customers protection laws, which are focused on the safety of customers’ interests. Moreover, the qualities of the infrastructure of the economy as well as the knowledge of the workforce are determinant factors in the political context of the country. Practices of employment or labor laws are also important for the automobile industry. Workforce protection laws are followed by Honda. Moreover, a tendency for a constant innovations and technological advancement is also reflected by the policies of the Company. Economic Environment of Honda influences development of economically safe and reliable automobiles and engines, which are customer-friendly. Business decisions of Honda are developed with respect to the main concerns of economic factors (Khanfan & Loudon, 2008). There is a strong

Piotr Ilytich Tchaikovsky’s “1812” Essay Example for Free

Piotr Ilytich Tchaikovsky’s â€Å"1812† Essay Composed by internationally-known classical musician, Piotr Ilytch Tchaikovsky, the classical music piece â€Å"1812 Overture in E Flat Major, Op. 49†, reflects the French invasion in Russia which was never victorious. With its full title, â€Å"The Year 1812,† Op. 49; French Ouverture Solonelle), the classical music also implies the withdrawal of Napoleon in 1812 during the Napoleonic Wars.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   The musical elements in the composition display some underlying themes which made it more interesting: tone, rhythm, harmony, and form.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   The tone uniquely displayed the varying pitch all through out the musical piece. This is manifested by the high pitch and low pitch that could be observed in the piece. The combination of the different pitches made the musical piece interesting to listen to.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Meanwhile, another interesting about the musical elements present in the composition is its rhythm. Tchaikovsky used unique sound representations in the composition, some of which are the horns and the firing of the cannons.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Another musical element is harmony. Despite the different pitches and rhythm present in the piece, the harmony of the musical notes and instruments that are used appear to be in agreement with each other; no â€Å"out-of-place† tunes could be observed, I think.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Lastly, the form of the musical piece is also worth noting. The form which tells about the over-all structure of the musical composition is also outstanding. The combination of the musical notes, tempo, tone, and the other elements came out smoothly.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   In addition, the 1812 Overture became known for its â€Å"real cannon fire† effects when it is performed live in outdoor events. Meanwhile, if the performance has to be done indoor, the orchestras use sounds representing the cannon fire through computer-generated sounds. Tchaikovsky entered the St. Petersburg Conservatory where he realized his true calling in the field of music. After some years, he later moved to another conservatory where he met a group of Russian composers. Those Russians were known to be nationalist which somewhat inspired Tchaikovsky in his second symphony entitled, The Little Russian. Being known as not sufficiently Russian and â€Å"cosmopolitan,† he was later rejected by this group. In 1880, Nicholas Rubenstein, Peter Illych Tchaikovsky’s mentor, suggested to Peter that a striking celebratory piece should be composed for festivities. The piece was to be presented in the square near the cathedral, with the accompaniment of a magnificent orchestra, cathedral bells and live cannon fire to attain the exactness stipulated by the musical score in which every shot was written exclusively (Lampson, 1999). Old Time Television :: essays research papers

Old Time Television I love Lucy Leave It to Beaver Honeymooners Superman Quiz shows!!!! Leave it to Beaver contributed to the notion of the perfect Fifties family. Parents never raised their voices or were too busy for the kids. Dad didn't work late. Mom, well, poor Mom seemed obliged to remain perfectly coifed and dressed regardless of task. Dusting, vacuuming, cooking. No matter. She always had a dress and her heels on. What they never showed was Mom ironing which must have been a daily ordeal to keep all those nice outfits pressed. A life crisis consisted of a lost report card or failure to eat your vegetables. Still, we watched. Amused by the comings and goings of the Cleaver family and I suspect, wishing our own families could be as perfect as the Cleavers. The Honeymooners was really television's first spin-off. I Love Lucy Lucille Ball was a pathfinder who paved the way for all the women in TV to follow. Without Lucy, arguably, there might not have been a Carol Burnett or Mary Tyler Moore. She proved women could be the leads and carry a show. Not one show, but several. None of which takes away from Desi Arnaz's estimable talents as a producer. His "can do" attitude made the "I Love Lucy Show" work. He innovated the three camera filming format still in use today. Previously, shows like this were performed before a live audience and preserved on kinescope which makes poor copies. Desi's filiming of Lucy is the reason there are great copies today. The show ran in a period of TV history when married people slept in separate beds which would explain why on TV, women didn't get "pregnant.
